Training Module - May 10, 2019 - Treatment of Gestational Diabetes

Presentation Objectives

  • Understand goals for managing a pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)
  • Review maternal and neonatal complications associated with diabetes during pregnancy
  • Review GDM blood glucose targets and ranges
  • Understand therapy goals and potential complications associated with each trimester
  • Review landmark studies (HAPO, ACHOIS, USPSTF) and optimal outcomes of glucose control
  • Analyze the use of oral agents and insulin therapy 
  • Predict failure or efficacy of current therapy
  • Review examples of oral agent and insulin dosing
  • Acknowledge that recent national diabetes guidelines (ADA, ACOG, SMFM) underscore that insulin is the preferred medication for treating hyperglycemia in GDM patients
  • Determine when hospitalization is indicated for glucose control
  • Maintain glycemic control in labor and immediately after delivery
